of maryland, st. joseph's medical center. meghan mccorkell explains what happened. meghan? >> baltimore county investigators remain out here on this scene. you can see a live look at the scene from sky eye chopper 13. right now, as police try and determine how an officer's weapon discharged during a struggle with a prisoner. >> reporter: it was just after 2:30 this afternoon. a female police officer was in the emergency room, guarding a prisoner, when hospital staff noticed something wasn't right. >> at some point, one of the hospital staff people discovered that the prisoner had a needle of some sort. hidden in his clothing. >> reporter: a hospital staff person tried to take the need a- - needle away, but the prisoner struggle. -- struggled. that's when the officer intervened. in the struggle, the officer's gun fired, discharging bothe -- into the wall. >> the officer discharged pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the prisoner. that attempt was unsuccessful. >> that's when they rushed to the scene and managed to subdue the prisoner. >> reporter: and

, alexander smith, national co-chair for the college republican national committee. meghan is chairman of the massachusetts alliance at college republicans. and jake wagner is chairman of the new hampshire federation of college republicans. welcome all three. nice to talk with you. so glad we were able to do this. i've been looking forward to it. alex appearedder, let me start with you because young voters were so drawn to president obama once again this year. not as much so as in 2008, but a big advantage over governor romney. 59 to 37%. why do you think that was? >> you know, we were able to make strides among the youth, decreasing the president's lead from 2008. this year we carried 37% of all 18 to 29-year-olds. this was a big accomplishment for the republican national college commit. we had our largest field staff out. 63 field reps in 25 battle ground states and together they produced about 7.2 million live voter contacts and recruited 52,000 new cr's. so we were tremendously proud of our field efforts. and i think that's largely what you see reflected in those numbers. if you re

medical center. meghan? >> baltimore county police remain out here on the scene of university of maryland st. joseph's medical center. we're told this incident happened around 2:30 this afternoon. you can see the video from sky eye chopper 13 right here. baltimore county police officer was here inside the emergency room. we're told that he was guarding a prisoner who was being treated here. now, there was some sort of struggle between the roof -- officer and prisoner. we're told the officer, his gun was somehow fired. that gun discharged into the wall. officer did subdue the prisoner. we're told no one was injured in this incident. and back here live, we want to show you that one of the entrances to the e.r. has been blocked off since that incident happened. they have someone out here from the hospital that has been rerouting people to another entrance to the e.r. so that the police can continue their investigation here. but again, no injuries after an officer's gun was discharged here in the e.r. we'll continue following this developing

for alcohol, he hit a car carrying lisa dickson and meghan napier, both 20. they died instantly. he got 22 years for the crime, which sounded just about right to renee napier, meghan's mom. >> i felt like our system had serve us well and justice had been served. i definitely felt that. >> reporter: but a few years later, a woman came forward and asked the judge to reduce eric's sentence in half. she claimed eric was truly sorry for what he had done and deserved leniency, and the judge obliged partly because of what she said but mostly because of who she was. do you realize what a gift you gave to this guy? >> i do. >> reporter: renee's 180 began with the single turn of a single phrase. first at sentencing and later in a letter, renee told eric she had forgiven him even though at the time she hadn't, not really. at trial, eric had actually been pretty defensive and unapologetic. >> i could hate him forever. and the world would tell me that i have a right to do that. but it's not going to do me any good, and it's not going to do him any good. i would grow old and bitter and angry and hateful

han? >> meghan? >> county investigators are on the scene after a struggle between an officer and a prison led to a shot being fired here in the e.r. now, we want to show you some new video that is just back into our newsroom. this incident happened just after 2:30 this afternoon. now, we're told that it was an officer that was garding a man that had been arrested for burglary. that man was being treated here in the e.r. hospital personnel found a needle on that prisoner that he was hiding in his clothing. the suspect then grabbed a medical personnel staff person here. that's when the officer immediately intervened. a struggle enshoed. the -- ensued. the prisoner trying to get to the officer's gun. that gun shot into the wall. no one was injured. the fire that shot went just into the wall of the e.r. now, we know that the officer did try to subdue the man with pepper spray at that point but that department work. other officers had to be called in to subdue that prisoner. again, county officials still out here on the scene investigating jus
